Macular Degeneration

Valli Opticians – leading the battle against sight threatening eye disease

We know how important your sight is to you. Our latest ground breaking innovation is our Macula Monitoring Programme.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the western world. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a painless eye condition that generally leads to the gradual loss of central vision but can sometimes cause a rapid reduction in vision. There are two types of AMD:

  1. Dry AMD – this is a slow disruption of vision getting worse over the period of some years.
  2. Wet AMD – this is where damage occurs quickly and dramatically, caused by the body’s response to sensing changes in the retina.

Treatments for AMD have differing rates of success so a programme of prevention is a preferable way to deter the disease.

How do we help prevent AMD?

●     Follow a good diet (low fat and healthy foods)

●     Prevent blue light damage (sunglasses, transitions, specialist clear lens coatings)

●     Look after your general health especially your blood pressure

●     Use dietary supplements and diet loading – possibly the easiest and most effective to implement

Can Dietary Supplements help you?

There have been many studies into whether supplements help to prevent AMD. Studies have concluded that supplements do reduce the rate of progression of AMD when patients show early deterioration. These supplements can encourage good eye health by providing the body with the building blocks for retinal cell production, repair and maintenance.

Valli recommend the use of the best supplements available, which means that you will always be receiving up to date and state of the art treatment. Supplements are a great addition even to a healthy diet, as they deliver powerful antioxidants and building block loads in the right volume to the sites where needed.

Can you Eat Your Eyes Healthy?

Valli have teamed up with a local chef to provide some fabulous ‘eye healthy’ food recipes, as part of our new Macular Monitoring Programme.

In addition to some fabulous recipes, we have devised an eye healthy vegetable box, which we can advise you on.  Food rich in vitamins A, C and E; antioxidants and Omega 3 are essential for good eye health. Such food can help protect against eye conditions such as AMD. Spinach, kale, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, broccoli, carrots blueberries and oily fish are all excellent eye healthy foods.

Many of us don’t know the best way to look after our eyes. This is why it is so important to get your eyes tested at least every two years, even if you think your vision is fine as some eye conditions may not show symptoms.

How do Valli detect AMD?

During an eye test we will use several instruments to check your eyes but by far the most effective for looking for all types of AMD is our state of the art OCT scanner. This allows us to look beneath the surface of the retina creating a 3D scan of the retinal structure that our optometrists can examine. This lets us check the health of your eyes and if we detect problems we can accurately monitor and manage your eye health.  We strongly recommend that patients with AMD have scans twice a year.

What is the Macula Monitoring Program?

Starting at £4.95 per month, the program includes a minimum of two OCT macula scans a year.  Depending on your exact requirement, monthly supplements may also be added as part of your plan.  Monthly payments will allow you to spread the cost.
