The winning design in the Valli Group ‘Dream Glasses’ competition

Pupils at primary schools in Calderdale and Huddersfield have been busy designing their dream glasses as part of a competition run by the Valli Group of Opticians.

Moin Valli, owner of the Valli Group, set the challenge during school talks he gave to children about how our eyes work and to promote the importance of eye health.

He said: “Along with giving the children some very important information about how to look after their eyes we thought it would be fun for them to enter a competition to design their dream pair of glasses. We had some fantastic entries and it was very hard to judge but the eventual winner was Sinead McCall, aged 10, of Colden Primary School who designed the ‘Ultra Glasses for Women’.”

The ‘Ultra glasses’ have every accessory you could possibly want! From in-built wipers for the lenses, a perfume sprayer, pen storer and even flaps for sherbet and strawberry laces!

The runners-up were Lara Quinn-Beaumont, aged 9, who designed x-ray vision glasses to be made out of ‘real dead snakes’ and Arron Adams, aged 11, whose silk coated ‘mini-gamer’ glasses included speakers and a built in PS3 and hearing aid!

All three designs will be displayed in the Valli Group’s Hebden Bridge practice, Mamtora Opticians.

Tony Greenwood, head teacher at Colden Primary School, said: “Our students enjoy a challenge and this one really set them thinking. They found the brief stimulating and responded very imaginatively. The talk about eye health was particularly useful and should help us all keep our pupils in good order.”

Moin Valli added: “The importance of good eye health cannot be underestimated. It’s really important that children have their eyes checked regularly, just as important as the trip to the dentist or having feet measured. Children need more frequent eye tests because their vision changes more quickly as they grow. At least every 12 months is recommended.”

Along with Mamtora Opticians in Hebden Bridge and Valli Opticians in Mytholmroyd the Valli Group owns a further five practices in West Yorkshire. A free NHS eye examination is available for children at all Valli Group Opticians. Toddlers and young children do not need to be able to read to have their eyes checked as Optometrists are able to carry out an eye test using pictures.
