What is short-sightedness (myopia)?
Short-sightedness, also known as myopia, is a very common eye condition affecting around 1 in 3 people in the UK.
Myopia causes distant objects (such as a classroom board or road signs) to appear blurred, while close-up vision remains clear. It is usually corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Myopia most commonly begins in childhood, often between the ages of 6 and 13, and can continue to worsen as the eyes grow.
Common signs of myopia in children include:
- Difficulty seeing clearly at a distance
- Sitting close to the TV or holding devices very near
- Frequent headaches or eye strain
- Rubbing the eyes often
- Squinting to see clearly
Myopia often runs in families, and if it progresses quickly it can lead to higher prescriptions over time. That is why early detection and management is so important.
There is however a new lens to treat myopia in children.
Introducing MiYOSMART – an innovative lens
The MiYOSMART spectacle lens is based on revolutionary Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) Technology. With this technology, the lens provides a full vision correction and has a ring-shaped treatment zone to slow down myopia progression. The combination of the focus zone and treatment zone provides clear vision and manages myopia simultaneously.

The University Valli Myopia Clinic
At University Valli Opticians, we offer a dedicated Myopia Management Clinic designed to help slow the progression of short-sightedness in children.
This specialist service goes beyond a standard sight test by combining expert clinical care with advanced technology to monitor how a child’s eyes are developing.
Advanced monitoring with Lenstar Biometry
One of the most important indicators of myopia progression is axial length – the physical growth of the eye.
Our clinic uses a Lenstar Biometer, an advanced scanner not available in most high street practices, to measure eye growth with exceptional accuracy.
This allows us to:
- Assess a child’s risk of rapid progression
- Track changes over time
- Tailor treatment plans more precisely
- Monitor results with confidence
If you are concerned about your child’s short-sightedness, or have noticed their prescription changing quickly, our team is here to help.
